Who is matias machado ?
Originally from Bordeaux, France, Matias Machado is a contemporary painter whose work explores human presence, identity, and the fragmented psyche through a raw, deconstructed figuration. Rooted in urban culture and neo-expressionism, his visual language borrows from the immediacy of the street ,scratch marks, chalky contours, and bold graphic outlines, while developing a deeply personal, painterly approach to portraiture.

ARTIST Q&A
How would you describe your artistic style?
My current work lives at the intersection of raw figurative abstraction, neo-expressionism, and deconstructed cubism. I focus on fragmenting the human figure to capture psychological depth, shifting perspectives, and raw emotion. My paintings are defined by visceral contrasts, layered textures, bold earth tones (deep colors, charcoal blacks), and instinctive, sharp linear mark-making that carves through the composition.
What inspires the recurring fragmented faces and layered profiles in your work?
My visual language originates from graffiti. The way I construct forms, shadows, and depth comes directly from spray techniques . Layering, gradients, and controlled transitions. Rather than painting literal portraits, I approach the canvas as a map of the inner self. The human mind is rarely static or singular; we are composed of overlapping memories, thoughts, and conflicting emotions. Superimposing profiles, split features, and gestural white contour lines allows me to depict multiple states of consciousness simultaneously. It is an exploration of identity, vulnerability, and human complexity.
